(Below two photos) Public School 27 on E. 42nd St and E. 41st St. next door to the Daily News building. Erected in 1906. View from the 41st St side South side of the school with the Daily News building in the background. The two photos captured a demolition worker with jackhammer on a very cold December 30th 1976.

Bronze plaque from inside the entrance, CBJ Snyder: architect. This school was almost demolished once before but the stock market crash of '29 prevented the plan to destroy a school just 23 year old at the time!!

It's fate was sealed later when land values rose greatly and the school was purchased for the land under it. The boiler room contained at least one small steam engine as I remember.

Public School doorknobs, a classic design from the New York City Public School system/Board of Education. These date to circa 1890's and I know they were in use at least till 1906 in the Public School system. I don't know when the design was phased out but I would guess maybe the 1920's and certainly by the 30's.
